WHAT ALIGNMENT REALLY MEANS
I’ve always liked the word alignment. But in recent years, it started to feel like an overused buzzword in the wellbeing and personal development space. I even shied away from using it in my own work because it seemed vague and cliché.
Lately though, the word has been resonating with me again.
I’d had a real-life conversation with someone and a few things stayed with me long after we spoke. And when I thought more deeply about this person’s story, I realised it offered a powerful reminder of what alignment really is — and why it matters.
a story about alignment
This individual shared a series of life updates with me:
An autoimmune condition had crept up in the past year.
Sleep was a constant struggle due to frequent business travel and shifting time zones.
A recent promotion had increased the pace of work, leaving little space for rest or recovery.
Family building was put on hold — something that has been a priority for years.
A medical professional had advised rest as a critical part of health management.
At the same time, this person was virtually living on airplanes, catching only brief stretches of downtime between business trips. There was talk about wanting to leave the rat race, build a quieter life in a smaller city, go abroad with the partner, and even start a business someday — dreams that had been mentioned more than once before.
On paper, this person was doing a lot and at a great point in their professional career. But when I stepped back and reflected on the story, I noticed how many of the actions weren’t in alignment with the future or life that had been envisioned.
WHERE GOALS AND ACTIONS MISALIGN
So here’s the reflection:
👉 What’s aligned in this story between ambitions and actions?
👉 Is there alignment in the story?
We’ve all been there. Saying we want something deeply… but living out a different reality.
“I want to get fit.” → But how many workouts are on your calendar?
“I want more work-life balance.” → But what boundaries are you actually setting?
“I want to save more money.” → But how are you managing your spending and income streams?
I’ve known what it feels like to be deeply out of alignment.
For me, it showed up during a season when I was in an intense job, carrying heavy grief and ignoring my deepest needs and desires.
The results of this misalignment were obvious. I was overweight and leaning into unhealthy habits, I had low interest in the activities that once lit me up, and I was not showing up as the best version of myself.
WHAT ALIGNMENT REALLY MEANS
Alignment isn’t about motivation or setting goals — it’s about prioritisation and being willing to change your behaviours to match your bigger vision.
Alignment is when actions match your aspiration.
It’s about consistently moving toward what matters most and not defaulting to survival mode.
That may mean:
Letting go of habits that drain your energy.
Making time for what you say is a priority.
Saying no to what doesn’t serve your bigger vision.
This is the difference between intention and progress.
HOW COACHING SUPPORTS ALIGNMENT
Unlike therapy, which helps us explore the why behind patterns, coaching is about creating clarity on what’s next and building the solutions and accountability to get there.
When you work with a coach, you:
Identify your true goals (not just the ones you think you “should” have).
Bridge the gap between intention and consistent action.
Create systems that help you maintain momentum, even when life gets busy.
Forward movement is key — because that’s what determines whether dreams stay in your head or become lived reality.
